Melbourne Loses Another Great Live Venue

It’s been a sad state of affairs for the Melbourne music scene in the past year with The Arthouse and Public Bar closing their doors, and the Prince Bandroom’s new owners indicating that live music may not be in its future.

Now, it seems the East Brunswick Club can be added to the list, with its last show expected sometime in the first few months of 2012.

“Partial demolition of an existing building, the development of a multi-storey building (five storeys plus basement) for shop and dwellings, use of the land for the purposes of dwellings, the continued use of part of the land for the purpose of an hotel and office space, waiver of loading bay requirements associated with the shop use and reduction in car parking requirements for the dwellings and shop” – Planning permits appear to show the demolition of the bandroom to make way for apartments.

“Some of us have been told the last show is at the end of February. The old owners have sold it, they’re retiring and the new owners are developing it into a five-storey apartment block.’’- According to a staff member to the Moreland Leader

“The new owners haven’t been in touch with us just yet and we haven’t been able to get in touch with them. We’ve got some really exciting shows to announce, and all current shows including Laneway Festival, Falls Festival and Mona Foma sideshows will be going ahead. We’ll be taking bookings until we know more” – East Brunswick Club music coordinator Jason Moore said after confirming there were indeed plans in motion to demolish the bandroom.
